Sulfa Availability

The availability of sulfadimethoxine has become nonexistent. Sulfamethazine is in short supply as well. We have obtained a supply of sulfamethazine that will be available until it's exhausted.

My concern is that the sulfa drugs are the only effective treatment of clinical coccidiosis.

Sulfaquinoxaline has been discontinued years ago.

I am not sure what's going on but I suspect the shortage of raw product is due to government intervention. There is a movement a foot by government agencies to make it more difficult for livestock producers to obtain pharmaceutical products to properly treat their sick animals. It is based on antibiotic resistance which may be fact or fiction. Sulfamethazine was around when I entered practice in 1960. Animal welfare is totally ignored over what may be bad information.

If you want to find antibiotic resistant organisms the most likely place to find them is in hospital surgery settings. Not the farm yard.
